In PUNCTUM Jewellery Workshop every jewellery piece we handcraft begins as an idea that is stimulated by an experience from the world that surrounds us. Our work explores the contrast between the natural environment and the human-made world, the tradition, and the contemporary culture to produce a unique style of jewellery pieces by trying to exceed the binary perceptions by contemplating where the design and the materials lead us.
All the jewellery designs are handcrafted on Corfu island, Greece by a family of experienced and passionate jewellers that spent four decades perfecting the art of handmade jewellery.
The procedure of making every piece starts by drawing the design, following by wax carving, casting and finish by hand working every detail and hand setting any gemstone.
In Punctum Jewellery workshop we focus on handcrafted jewelleries pieces that lasts and hold in time. Naturally, our materials are all ethically sourced, many taken from older pieces of jewellery to be reloved and reworn. All the silver we use is scrapped and recycled, and we try to do the same for gold, by cooperating with suppliers that make possible the lowest environmental impact at mining.
We carefully select precious and semi-precious stones to complement our collections silver, gold and adding sparkling colour to our distinctive rings, bracelets, pendants and earrings.
Our name is a loan by the notion “punctum” that was introduced by Roland Barthes in his work “Camera Lucida: Reflections of Photography” first published in French in 1980. Barthes on his analysis claims that punctum is an object or an element that jumps out at the viewer within a photograph, is the rare detail which rises from the scene and unintentionally fills the whole image and attracts you, ‘its mere presence changes my reading, that I am looking at a new photograph, marked in my eyes with a higher value.’
Punctum basically could be anything, something that reminds you of your childhood, a sense of Déjà vu, an object of sentimental value, punctum is very personal and often different for everyone. It retains an ‘aberrant’ quality.
To us punctum can have a wider meaning applied to the jewellery making but also to the jewellery wearing. We claim that there are elements in the jewellery making that can act as a punctum to the item itself making it unique. At the same time, we believe that a worn jewellery can act as a punctum on the human body.
A piece of jewellery although it can be seen as a small detail can serve lots of connotations, it may represent a memory, an emotion, a happy moment or even recall a beloved one. A piece of jewellery can be a statement to fulfil the image and make the persons ‘presence special and memorable, therefore can stand a punctum of our own self.
